In the 1960s, the concept of environment and environmental assets began to take on a more and more precise scientific profile, starting with the first studies on the environment of monuments developed by Giovannoni, gradually increasing the interest of restorers, first to the dimension of historical monuments and then to the understanding of the vastness of territories. The years in which the ICOMOS conference in Venice took place are crucial because it is in this period that the theoretical and operational principles emerged, which still characterise our actions today and animate, in many respects, the current discussion. In addition to the theme of the grafting of contemporary buildings into the ancient fabric, the theoretical principles that were becoming clearer in those years were translated into the problem of the relationship between restoration and architectural and urban design.
