The paper aims to trace a critical review of the earliest funerary latin iscriptions found in Rome and Latium ; it also focuses on the development of their public display (the « scritture esposte »). Besides of the few epitaphs from family tombs of aristocratic families of Rome (as the well-known Tomb of the Scipios), particular attention is paid to the inscribed stone cippi (mostly pine cone shaped) and portrait busts, that characterize the funerary landscape of the Prenestine necropolis from the ivth down to the end of IInd centuries BC.
