This contribution aims to investigate the relationship between the proconsul and Greek poleis during the Republican and early imperial period starting from the epigraphical evidence. The presence of the proconsul could be a guarantee of order and stability for the Greek cities, that often set up dedications in his honor. Letters and senatus consulta also attest to the participation of the proconsul in Greek affairs. While major centers had more frequent interactions, minor ones could engage with the proconsul on specific occasions. The attitudes of both Greeks and Roman proconsuls could vary, according to the context. Especially in the sanctuaries, the presence of the proconsul was intertwined with local religious beliefs. On the other hand, the use of language in offical contexts can be considered a mirror of the political situation. The analysis of the epigraphical evidence, supported by the literary sources, can offer, therefore, valuable insights into the relationship between the Greeks and the Roman authority.

Abstract
The analysis of the epigraphical evidence, supported by the literary sources, can offer, therefore, valuable insights into the relationship between the Greeks and the Roman authority.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
