The Norman castle of Arena is now part of a village in southern Italy (Calabria). It has been probably founded by the Normans and it used to be an important central place till the end of the Middle Ages. The excavation made in Summer 2023 aims to reconstruct the life of the castle, basing on excavation data from 2021. We will provide a short overview of the data concerning the castle and its foundation. Beyond expectation the archaeological records are so complex: some architectural structures and special finds have been found, information that allows us to interpret their function. We are undergoing also an intensive survey in the whole county with attention to the water management system made by canalizations called prise and basins called gebbie.

Abstract
The Norman castle of Arena is now part of a village in southern Italy (Calabria). It has been probably founded by the Normans and it used to be an important central place till the end of the Middle Ages. The excavation made in Summer 2023 aims to reconstruct the life of the castle, basing on excavation data from 2021. We will provide a short overview of the data concerning the castle and its foundation. Beyond expectation the archaeological records are so complex: some architectural structures and special finds have been found, information that allows us to interpret their function. We are undergoing also an intensive survey in the whole county with attention to the water management system made by canalizations called prise and basins called gebbie.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
