What does talking about matter mean for the architect? What does matter mean in relation to poetics? First of all, a nominal dimension is proposed, which is also philosophical, of the word matter, of the term poetics, of the relationship between the two. In order to proceed, it is necessary to exclude and limit the field of reflection... and this already defines a position. What follows is a discussion, inevitably incomplete on a central and vast theme, which intends to give, also due to the extension of the text, only a few ideas. There is a first level of use: the architect uses matter, both the abstract concept and its concrete declination in materials. This means that it conceives an ideal, mental, conceptual and physical dimension. Given that we exclude the discussion on materials here, we must then talk about the conception of matter, that is, how, on an intellectual level, the architect constructs and structures his own poetics. In the reflection on poetics, in the architect’s thought, matter becomes the conception of matter. It means, therefore, that the conception of matter interferes and nourishes, as well as delineates the poetics. Matter thus becomes generative. And it also interacts with the formal conception. Matter and form constitute a difficult problematic node, since they simultaneously contain a universal dimension but are expressed in particular representations.

Abstract
Matter and form constitute a difficult problematic node, since they simultaneously contain a universal dimension but are expressed in particular representations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
