The quotation from Suetonius in the title (Aug. 83) refers to the playful and infantile component that is an important part of Roman otium. This article aims to investigate the ways in which otium, as it was particularly practiced by Augustus, corresponds to a studied strategy in defining an image of princeps who was authoritative and, nevertheless, capable of dissolving conflicts through irony.
