L’otium degli Antonini in villa

The spaces in which it was usually attempted to recognise the most suitable places to spend moments of leisure and time away from commitments, that is, moments of otium, are those linked to a specific type of ancient architecture: the villae. The idea of Roman otium villae includes architectures that were widespread in suburban landscapes, usually located in particularly impressive and environmentally suggestive places. These include imperial villas. In this contribution, the sites in ancient Latium where the emperors of the Antonine family spent their moments of otium are analysed.

Gli spazi in cui si è cercato abitualmente di riconoscere i luoghi più adatti a trascorrere momenti di svago e di lontananza dagli impegni, ovvero momenti di otium, sono quelli legati ad un tipo specifico di architetture antiche: le villae. Sotto il nome di ville d’ozio sono state comprese architetture di età romana diffuse nei paesaggi suburbani ed extraurbani, abitualmente collocate in luoghi particolarmente scenografici e suggestivi dal punto di vista ambientale. Rientrano tra queste anche le ville imperiali. In questo contributo vengono analizzati i luoghi del Lazio antico dove gli imperatori della dinastia degli Antonini trascorrevano i loro momenti di otium.
