Abstract

The circulation of knowledge in XVII century Europe found a privileged channel in epistolary exchanges involving the dispatch of new books, spices, scientific discoveries. Exchanges of this nature were especially intense within the virtual Republic (yet at once thriving and real) known as République des Lettres. The phrasing is significant, bringing into XVII century Europe the concept, method, finalities of the Res Publica Literaria (the Latin denomination being attested in Petrarch, let us note). Through a survey of the letters of Viviani and other sources, the figure of the Jesuit Baldigiani (whose eminence pertains more to cultural history, than the history of censorship) is outlined as case study; special attention is devoted to his appointment by the Master of the Sacred Palace Bianchi as censor of Pierre Bayle’s Nouvelles de la République des Lettres.
