At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Tommaso Gargallo, nobleman from Syracuse and marquis of Castel Lentini (1760-1843), was a relevant poet and a remarkable translator of the works of Horace. The several and successful editions of his translations hearken back to the Italian poetic tradition and, following on from the Horatian studies of the eighteenth century, stand as an important chapter of the history of Classicism. Gargallo engaged in a rich and complex translation in verses, making use of different metrics, of the lyric and then exametric production of the poet from Venosa. In doing this, he stuck to the principles of adherence to the original version and, at the same time, of respect of the person-ality of the author as well as of the poetic sensibility of the translator. Most often, he did not hesitate to modify the Latin text, also with significant expansions and alterations, preserving the coherence and congruity with the original version.
Il nobile siracusano Tommaso Gargallo, marchese di Castel Lentini (1760-1843), fu poeta di rilievo e soprattutto importante traduttore dell’opera di Orazio al principio dell’Ottocento. Le diverse e fortunate edizioni della sua versione si richiamano alla tradizione poetica italiana e, sulla scia degli studi oraziani settecenteschi, costituiscono un importante capitolo della storia del classicismo. Secondo i principi di fedeltà all’originale, ma anche di ri-spetto dello spirito dell’autore e della sensibilità poetica del traduttore, Gargallo si è cimentato in una ricca ed elaborata traduzione in versi di differente metro della produzione lirica e poi esametrica del poeta di Venosa. Egli non esita spesso a modificare – anche con ampliamenti e rielaborazioni significative – la lettera del testo latino, in nome della consonanza e vicinanza poetica con l’originale.
