We know a lot about Octavian/Augustus’ activities and inclinations in his life beyond military commands, magistracies and governments. In this paper, private life and private “spaces” of the princeps are discussed in the light of the literary tradition and of the more recent assessments in the archaeological research and debate about the monuments identified as Octavian Augustus’ residences in Rome – with a focus on his last residence on the Palatine before and after 36 B.C.E. – and in Italy. It is also examined how the princeps’ otium has been described by the Ancients and in which architectural and topographical contexts we can set his private life.

Abstract

We know a lot about Octavian/Augustus’ activities and inclinations in his life beyond military commands, magistracies and governments. In this paper, private life and private “spaces” of the princeps are discussed in the light of the literary tradition and of the more recent assessments in the archaeological research and debate about the monuments identified as Octavian Augustus’ residences in Rome – with a focus on his last residence on the Palatine before and after 36 B.C.E. – and in Italy. It is also examined how the princeps’ otium has been described by the Ancients and in which architectural and topographical contexts we can set his private life.
