La nascita del restauro dalla critica del progetto: il Settecento

The traditional process of embellishment and improvement of the buildings of the past, always declined in line with the taste and needs of the present, sees a long critical phase in the 18th century, when slowly and not gradually, the need for authenticity detaches itself from the creative process . Naturally, requests that arose previously are accepted, especially at the time of the conflict between Lutherans and Catholics on the meaning of tradition. The "architects' errors" are therefore all the more felt when they apply to the treatment of monuments, especially ancient ones, but also modern ones. The long debate that arises essentially leads to a gap between the creation of the new and knowledge of the past, to be entrusted to specially trained specialists. A dichotomy that spans the following two centuries up to the present day, which sees the impact of modernity radically change.

Il tradizionale processo di abbellimento e miglioramento degli edifici del passato, sempre declinato in linea con il gusto e le necessità del presente, vede una lunga fase critica nel XVIII secolo, quando lentamente e non gradualmente, l’esigenza di autenticità si stacca dal processo creativo. Naturalmente, si recepiscono istanze nate in precedenza, soprattutto ai tempi della contrapposizione tra luterani e cattolici sul senso della tradizione. Gli “errori degli architetti” sono quindi tanto più sentiti quando si applicano al trattamento dei monumenti, soprattutto antichi, ma anche moderni. Il lungo dibattito che ne nasce porta sostanzialmente ad uno stacco tra creazione del nuovo e conoscenza del passato, da affidare a specialisti appositamente preparati. Una dicotomia che attraversa i due secoli successivi per arrivare fino ai nostri giorni, che vedono mutare radicalmente il portato della modernità.
