Rail transportation is one of the most important sectors for transporting commodities and people. Complementary non-electrified rail lines that still use diesel-powered trains should be converted to increase sustainability. This paper presents the preliminary design and experimental validation of a scaled test bench for the application of a fuel cell/battery system for a railway traction vehicle. For this purpose, a data measurement station is implemented in the LabVIEW environment. Experimental tests are carried out to evaluate the main operating parameters and characterize its main components. A real pathway is used as input for the tests. In the specific range of use, the battery shows more excellent stability and higher electrical efficiency than the fuel cell.
