The aim of this article is analyzing two macroscopical examples (i.e. the Amazons and the Caucasian populations) of environmental determinism from Strabo's 11th book, in order to confute the assumption that Strabo offers environmental deterministic perspectives and to explain how he uses cultural Greek categories. The passages will be discussed under a philological and historical approach. Given the substantial difference between them, the final result will show that, at least in Strabo, the idea of barbaroi is not a fixed concept, but a contextual, fluid, scaled and perceived one.

Abstract
The aim of this article is analyzing two macroscopical examples (i.e. the Amazons and the Caucasian populations) of environmental determinism from Strabo's 11th book, in order to confute the assumption that Strabo offers environmental deterministic perspectives and to explain how he uses cultural Greek categories. The passages will be discussed under a philological and historical approach. Given the substantial difference between them, the final result will show that, at least in Strabo, the idea of barbaroi is not a fixed concept, but a contextual, fluid, scaled and perceived one.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
