In loco Calvariae. L’uso funerario del Santo Sepolcro e la costruzione dell’ideologia regale franca in Outremer nell’Historia Hierosolymitana di Alberto di Aquisgrana

Written in the first half of the XII Century, Albert of Aachen’s Historia Hierosolymitana describes the burials of duke Godfrey of Bouillon and his brother, king Baldwin I of Jerusalem, inside the complex of the Holy Sepulchre. After outlining an overview of both the author and his work, the paper will focus on the relationship between these tombs – including their description in the text – and the elaboration of a political ideology able to justify the power and the own existence of the Latin monarchy in Jerusalem. In addition, this study will provide a structural reconstruction of these two royal monuments, searching for their morphological and typological models among contemporary funerary production.

Scritta nella prima metà del XII secolo, l'Historia Hierosolymitana di Alberto di Aquisgrana descrive le sepolture del duca Goffredo di Buglione e di suo fratello, re Baldovino I di Gerusalemme, poste all'interno del complesso del Santo Sepolcro. Delineata una panoramica sia dell'autore che della sua opera, l'articolo si sofferma sulla relazione tra queste tombe - inclusa la loro descrizione nel testo - e l'elaborazione di un'ideologia politica in grado di giustificare il potere e la stessa esistenza della monarchia latina a Gerusalemme. In aggiunta, questo studio fornisce anche una ricostruzione strutturale dei due monumenti regi, ricercandone i modelli morfologici e tipologici nella produzione funeraria contemporanea.
