The project concerns a provenance study of Zeus/Owl bronze coins, dated to the 3rd century BC and coming from the Greek colony of Velia (Italy). The chemical elemental composition and the Lead isotope analyses were carried out at the CHNet department of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso-INFN by using ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) and TIMS (Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry) techniques. Lead isotope ratios were compared with those from several ore deposits of the main Mediterranean areas and the elemental composition was studied to fingerprint the sources of the investigated coins. Most of the coins obtain a certain source overlapping several clusters of Greece (Siros, Kea, Antiparos, Serifos and Sifnos) and Spain South-East (Cartagena-Mazarron and Almeria). Six coins appear to have uncertain provenance indicating the option of metal recycling, while one coin overlaps with Spain South-East and Tuscany clusters, sharing the same provenance probability. This information helps to reconstruct the trade routes for the supply of metal and socio-economic relationship of Velia.
