La Storia was adapted for the screen for the first time by Luigi Comencini in 1986. A shorter version of the film was released in cinemas, while a fourand- a-half-hour version was broadcast in three parts on Rai 2 in December 1986. The recent TV series—an eight-episode television series directed by Francesca Archibugi and broadcast on Rai 1 from 8 to 23 January 2024—appears as the most recent example of a contemporary reading of the work in a different medium: in the hands of screenwriters Francesco Piccolo, Ilaria Macchia and Giulia Calenda, Morante’s novel is translated for television. With specific reference to La Storia, this contribution aims to reflect on how the transposition of a narrative into a different medium and cultural context requires cultural and linguistic adaptation, which results in modifying the narrative structure itself. The reflection on the phenomenon of intermediality and on adaptation as a form of translation will be followed by a conversation with Giulia Calenda.
