This study reflects on the challenging recovery of the Cittadella of Ancona along a path that uncovers its hidden potential and develops a process for recognizing the historical and cultural value of the property to promote its active protection. The research highlights the collective responsibility for preserving abandoned heritage sites, which could pave the way for protecting others in danger. It employs various qualitative and quantitative methodologies, mainly scientific and grey literature review, archive research, interview, site inspection, mapping, photographic survey, data and project analysis. Investigating a specific case leads to a far-reaching conclusion: in the age of complexity, enhancing cultural heritage requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach, an integrated vision of the assets and long-term planning. This method needs to overcome divisions to increase the involvement of public and private entities, especially citizens, working towards a shared goal: the Cittadella as a common good. Erected in 1532 on the top of Colle Astagno by the renowned architect Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, the mighty fortification represents one of the earliest examples of the Italian-type bastioned front and played a crucial role in the defense of the city, contributing to its identity. Abstract
From the late 19th century, it gradually lost its significance. However, it held a military function until 1972, when an earthquake struck Ancona, followed by decades of neglect and degradation, heavily damaging its structure. The Marche Region, owner since 2003, is still committed to restoring the fortress to its former glory. The case is exemplary in shedding light on some issues shared by similar interventions and is significant because the Cittadella seems forgotten even by scholars.
