Abstract

The last article of Venice Charter prescribes documentation of conservation work and archaeological excavations for the purpose of archiving and publication; it is intended to clarify the characteristics of the works, promote knowledge of the monuments and contribute to the establishment of a conservation-oriented culture. The point formulated in the Venetian congress is in clear continuity with indications contained in previous Charters and norms, following their directives without introducing updates. The diffusion of digital technologies, in particular GIS and BIM systems, has considerably broadened the operational and temporal scope of this principle; an experimentation conducted on the Italia Market in via Catania and a hypothesis of application to the covered local markets realized in Rome in the 20th century allow us to briefly describe the potential of the method, while outlining the changes that have taken place in recent decades in the field of conservation and documentation.
