The trial of the Sephardic families that arrived in Pisa in 1606 has been analysed from two distinct perspectives: firstly, from a long-term viewpoint of the relations between the Medici power and the Roman Inquisition; and secondly, from the position of the women accused. The present article examines the role played by the papal nuncio Antonio Grimani in the Pisa affair. On the one hand, the nuncio, charged with the responsibility of maintaining vigilance against heresy, was granted the authority to oversee the proceedings by the Roman authorities following the conclusion of the initial phase, which was conducted by the Medici tribunal of the Otto di Guardia e Balìa. On the other hand, the dynamics of his leadership were linked with the political relations between Rome and Florence and the not always straightforward relations with the Holy Office. The analysis demonstrates that Grimani, despite appearing to be obedient to the Holy Office, was likely acting in collaboration with Ferdinando I de’ Medici, which caused discontent in Rome and led to his successor – Agostino Valier – limiting the flexible function of safeguarding orthodoxy that had previously been attributed to the apostolic nuncio in the Granduchy.

Abstract
The analysis demonstrates that Grimani, despite appearing to be obedient to the Holy Office, was likely acting in collaboration with Ferdinando I de’ Medici, which caused discontent in Rome and led to his successor – Agostino Valier – limiting the flexible function of safeguarding orthodoxy that had previously been attributed to the apostolic nuncio in the Granduchy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
