The article analyzes the evidence on the education of Philopoemen and his pupil and admirer Polybius in Megalopolis (3rd and 2nd centuries BCE). The civic values learned in this milieu are similar to those conveyed by the Spartan agogè: the common good of the city is to be put before the aspirations of individual citizens. Finally, the article addresses the issue of Philopoemen’s attitude at the time of the re-foundation of Megalopolis (222-217 BCE), and that of Polybius’ judgment on this event.

Abstract
The article analyzes the evidence on the education of Philopoemen and his pupil and admirer Polybius in Megalopolis (3rd and 2nd centuries BCE). The civic values learned in this milieu are similar to those conveyed by the Spartan agogè: the common good of the city is to be put before the aspirations of individual citizens. Finally, the article addresses the issue of Philopoemen’s attitude at the time of the re-foundation of Megalopolis (222-217 BCE), and that of Polybius’ judgment on this event.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
