This essay outlines the premises and research goals that have informed the design of the volume ‘Music and the Spiritual since the French Revolution’. Building on a review of the latest research on secularization, which has revealed the limitations of the conventional paradigm and the inclination to portray this phenomenon in terms of a linear 'emancipation' or 'liberation' from religious institutions and norms, an alternative approach to the study of the relationship between music and spirituality is proposed that could transcend the traditional dichotomy between the sacred and the secular. The decline of religious influence on musical practices has not been a linear process, but rather one characterized by periods of acceleration and deceleration. This has been shaped by a complex interplay of opposing forces, including the compensatory dynamics of the 'sacralization' of art, which has played a significant role not only in German Romanticism but also in subsequent centuries. From this perspective, the study of the relationship between secularization and musical practices can be seen as a particularly fruitful area of enquiry, offering insights not only into the interpretation of musical phenomena, but also into the ways in which religion has been transformed in secularized societies and continues to retain its importance.

Abstract
From this perspective, the study of the relationship between secularization and musical practices can be seen as a particularly fruitful area of enquiry, offering insights not only into the interpretation of musical phenomena, but also into the ways in which religion has been transformed in secularized societies and continues to retain its importance.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
