In this article, we will analyze some of the strategies that the Zoroastrian clergy adopted in order to survive under Islamic rule, once the Sasanian dynasty it relied on fell. Following the Islamic conquest, the Zoroastrian clergy lost much of the power it previously held, the priestly hierarchical structure disintegrated and the loss of a central authority caused general confusion. Later, under al-Maʾmūn (786 - 833 CE), the zoroastrian community appears to be united under the figure of the Hudēnān Pēšōbāy, ‘leader of the Zoroastrian faithful’, who resided in the court of the Abbasid caliph in Baghdad.
