The present study deals with the events surrounding the construction of Saint Anthony’s from Padua convent in Palermo occurred during the first thirty years of 1600, in a property granted by Lady Margherita Mirabile, located outside Porta of Vicari. The Reformed Friars Minor of Val di Mazara’s custody, during the 1620s, deeply advocated the foundation of a new settlement in Palermo, so much so that their convent of Saint Mary of Jesus which was located on the far-off outskirts of Palermo could not cope with the sick friars’ growing needs and for whom it was necessary to travel to the centre of the city more and more. Due to these reasons, with the consent of the Superiors and of the Senate of Palermo, the construction of Saint Anthony’s from Padua convent commenced in June 1630. Renowned architects all over the Sicilian isle as well as some talented workforce participated in its erection. After the building of the Church and the convent was finished, the Senate of Palermo formally hailed Saint Anthony from Padua as patron of the city on June 15th 1635. In the same year the construction of the monumental square near Saint Antonio’s convent, with the design by the architect Vincenzo La Barbera, took place.
Lo studio affronta le vicende relative alla costruzione del convento di Sant’Antonio di Padova di Palermo, avvenuta nel corso degli anni trenta del Seicento, in un terreno donato da donna Margherita Mirabile, posto fuori dalla Porta di Vicari. I frati Minori riformati della custodia del Val di Mazara, nel corso degli anni venti del Seicento, caldeggiarono profondamente la fondazione di una nuova dimora a Palermo, tanto piu` che il loro convento palermitano di Santa Maria di Gesu` si trovava in una zona piuttosto periferica e in quanto erano considerevolmente aumentati i bisogni dei frati infermi, per i quali era necessario portarsi sempre piu` spesso in citta`. Per questi motivi, avendo ottenuto il consenso dei superiori e del senato di Palermo, nel mese di giugno 1630 ebbero inizio i lavori di costruzione del convento di Sant’Antonio da Padova. Alla sua edificazione presero parte architetti e maestranze specializzate, largamente apprezzate in ambiente siciliano. Ultimata la fabbrica della chiesa e del convento, il senato di Palermo, con deliberazione del 15 giugno 1635, acclamava il santo di Padova patrono della citta`. Nel corso dello stesso anno, ebbero inizio pure i lavori per la realizzazione della piazza monumentale posta di fronte al convento di Sant’Antonio, progettata dall’architetto Vincenzo La Barbera.
