The illustrated satirical press’s success in Liberal Italy resulted from critical political, social, and media changes. This essay delves into the satirical representation of the police in these publications, revealing the birth and endurance of iconic and thematic stereotypes that have persisted in the national collective imagery from the twentieth century to the present. It also uncovers a delegitimization process driven by political forces (socialist, democratic, catholic) against the Liberal State, a narrative that, despite its populist and anti-political message, would gain significant momentum in the following decades.

Abstract
The illustrated satirical press’s success in Liberal Italy resulted from critical political, social, and media changes. This essay delves into the satirical representation of the police in these publications, revealing the birth and endurance of iconic and thematic stereotypes that have persisted in the national collective imagery from the twentieth century to the present. It also uncovers a delegitimization process driven by political forces (socialist, democratic, catholic) against the Liberal State, a narrative that, despite its populist and anti-political message, would gain significant momentum in the following decades.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
