This paper aims to focus on the importance that the Academic world, up to the so-called '68, gave to Latin written composition in order to verify students' acquaintance with the Latin language and its main structures. By analizing samples taken from written tests kept in the historical archive of the University of Padua, we will demonstrate that, since the very first university regulations after the Italian process of unification, active competence in Latin, both through the expression of an original thought and through translation into Latin, has been considered the best way to assess the mastery of the language of those who would teach it.

Abstract
This paper aims to focus on the importance that the Academic world, up to the so-called '68, gave to Latin written composition in order to verify students' acquaintance with the Latin language and its main structures. By analizing samples taken from written tests kept in the historical archive of the University of Padua, we will demonstrate that, since the very first university regulations after the Italian process of unification, active competence in Latin, both through the expression of an original thought and through translation into Latin, has been considered the best way to assess the mastery of the language of those who would teach it.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
