A dual-polarimetric approach to extract coastline using dual- polarimetric coherent HH, HV SAR data is first proposed. The approach is physically based and exploits: a) the different symmetry properties that characterize land and sea, to allow a robust land/sea separation; b) simple image processing, to extract the coastline. The approach is verified against actual RadarSAT-2 SAR data and it is shown to be both effective (a typical SAR scene is processed in seconds) and accurate.

Abstract

A dual-polarimetric approach to extract coastline using dual- polarimetric coherent HH, HV SAR data is first proposed. The approach is physically based and exploits: a) the different symmetry properties that characterize land and sea, to allow a robust land/sea separation; b) simple image processing, to extract the coastline. The approach is verified against actual RadarSAT-2 SAR data and it is shown to be both effective (a typical SAR scene is processed in seconds) and accurate.
