The paper aims to trace the history of explorations of two Appennine mountain chaines during the nineteenth century. Reference is made to the mountain massifs of Velino and Sirente in Abruzzo, which to this day have not been analysed by specific historical geographic studies. The study will be conducted by focusing on the perception of the mountains not only by the explorers, but also by the local guides and the population of surrounding villages.
