Abstract

In the aftermath of the unifi cation of Italy, the need was felt to defi ne an architectural-urban language that was the expression of a national style. The typology of the building on porticoes was thus considered the expression of an “Italian model” and was therefore adopted in the design of the new squares in Turin, Milan, Florence and also in Rome, despite this type being practically unknown. In this context, the survey of one of the porticoed facades that defi ne Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is presented, the subject of one of the most impressive post-unifi cation renovation projects in Rome. The objective is to document the current state and then investigate, through the analysis of shape and size, the compositional and ideational process underlying the building construction, in the belief that this knowledge constitutes the indispensable basis for setting up any valorization project.
