In 1947, Gaetano Salvemini is seventy-four years old and has been missing from Italy since 1925, when he was forced to leave the country due to legal proceedings related to the clandestine anti-fascist sheet «Non Mollare». In the decade preceding his definitive settlement at Harvard, he fully lived what his friend Mary Berenson and called his «third life», the season of exile between London and Paris which made him a cosmopolitan intellectual. In the American period he assumed a central role in the American academic and cultural world, without however losing ties with the European and Italian situation. The Diario italiano is the account of the first two months of the European journey that Salvemini made from 15 July to 21 November 1947. The historian, two days after his arrival in England and until 17 September, systematically transcribes conversations with newfound friends and occasional acquaintances on the first Italian post-war period. The Diario appears as an exceptional source for better understanding the many activities undertaken and the new interests that Salvemini will cultivate with the permanent return to Italy in 1949.

Abstract
The Diario appears as an exceptional source for better understanding the many activities undertaken and the new interests that Salvemini will cultivate with the permanent return to Italy in 1949.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
