The volume displays a sharp and articulated study of the notion of friendship in the Renaissance. This erudite work offers a comprehensive European gaze on the subject, moving across genres (philosophical treatises, letters, emblems, poetry, commentaries) and contexts (private circles, editorial enterprises, public debates) in early modern Spain, France, Italy, England, Germany. Moving between two main perspectives (philosophical and philological) and offering a wide range of case studies, the volume shows how the classical notion of friendship was appropriated and reworked by the Renaissance.

Abstract

The volume displays a sharp and articulated study of the notion of friendship in the Renaissance. This erudite work offers a comprehensive European gaze on the subject, moving across genres (philosophical treatises, letters, emblems, poetry, commentaries) and contexts (private circles, editorial enterprises, public debates) in early modern Spain, France, Italy, England, Germany. Moving between two main perspectives (philosophical and philological) and offering a wide range of case studies, the volume shows how the classical notion of friendship was appropriated and reworked by the Renaissance.
