The article aims to demonstrate that the letter addressed by Nersēs Šnorhali to the bishops and vardapet-s of Armenia included in the collection of the Catholicos’ epistles is not to be considered the convocation to the synod which was supposed to discuss the union between the Armenian and Byzantine Churches. Furthermore, on the basis of clues both internal to this letter and provided by the Catholicos’ correspondence, we propose for this writing a dating between August 1172 and the first months of 1173.
