Abstract

Laser technologies are becoming indispensable in space exploration due to their ability to provide precise data, expedite information transmission and optimize energy usage. LIDAR technologies for space applications stand out as exceptionally promising. Leonardo is engaged in CALIGOLA, a space mission for Earth observation, focusing on evaluating the feasibility of an elastic backscatter (Rayleigh-Mie) and Raman rotational Lidar instrument, employing for the first time ever three wavelengths simultaneously emitted from the laser (354.7, 532, 1064 nm). Leonardo S.p.A. is also involved in the TECLAS project, funded by ASI, aiming to align its efforts with the AEOLUS Follow- On ESA project to develop a demonstrator of a Power Laser Head, grounded on the proven technology of tripled Nd:YAG diode-pumped MOPA. Furthermore, Leonardo will participate in two Optical Roadmaps on key technologies to raise the performance of the Lidar concept designed for CALIGOLA: one focused on the development and validation of optical amplifiers to increase national technological expertise and the other with Sapienza University of Rome on the development of new generation detectors (SPAD).
