This paper discusses the relationship between chivalric subject matter and national identity in France during the 16th century, focusing in particular on the strategies of the so-called repatriation of paladins in the French version of Herberay des Essart’s Amadis de Gaula (1540) and Jean de Boyssière’s Arioste françoes (1580).
