Nuove forme di rigenerazione e riuso delle cave dismesse: il caso del Parco Scultura La Palomba

The uncontrolled extraction to obtain useful materials for the construction has often irreversibly altered the morphology of the territory. Along the Appian Road, towards Matera, there is a system of tuff quarries in the open, partly disused. The mining sites represent cuts in the characteristic landscape of the Murgies. In one of these landscape gaps, local artist Antonio Paradiso decided to set up a permanent art exhibition with some of his works-installations creating the Sculpture La Palomba Park. The artist has thus managed to create a unique place of its kind, a «place of anthropological art», as he likes to call it, where the culture and history of the surrounding society are told through works of art. In this case, art expresses itself through waste: the discard of the materials that make up the installations; the waste of the landscape, an abandoned tuff quarry, the emblem of abandonment. The contribution wants to illustrate the constitutive characteristics of the intervention and wants to highlight the action of social and environmental mending performed in a delicate landscape context.
