I Concorsi Clementini di terza classe quali specchio dell’apprendimento dell’architettura a Roma e nel resto dello Stato Pontificio

The paper aims to highlight the crucial role of the Third-Class Clementine Competitions both in architects’ education and in the development of the Late Baroque artistic taste. Their influence was certainly expressed in the selection of the models proposed by the isctructors of the St. Luke Academy, but it also had repercussions in other papal centers. For example, prepared during the second half of the 18th century and after a study trip in Rome, the catalogs produced by the “Faenza painter and architect” Giuseppe Boschi (1732-1802) certify the authority that Rome still exercised at that time and the influence the city had over the surrounding peripheral towns.

Il contributo mira a corroborare il ruolo centrale già riconosciuto ai Concorsi Clementini di Terza Classe nella formazione e nell’orientamento del gusto architettonico nel Tardobarocco pontificio: un’influenza espressa certamente nella selezione dei soggetti proposti per gli esercizi scolastici svolti presso l’Accademia di San Luca ma ravvisabile altresì nelle sue ricadute anche nel resto dello Stato Ecclesiastico. Ne danno testimonianza i campionari autografi del «pittore ed architetto faentino» Giuseppe Boschi (1732-1802): manoscritti che, preparati nel corso della seconda del Settecento e successivi al perfezionamento del professionista a Roma, certificano sia l’autorità di cui l’Urbe ancora godeva all’epoca sia – soprattutto – l’ascendente, tuttavia, esercitato sulle realtà papali più periferiche, in bilico fra la tradizione barocca e il nuovo classicismo emergente.
