The courtyard house is the distinctive feature of Mediterranean cities, a place for living so desired that it has inspired entire sessions of ideal experimentation by numerous architects over the years. In this form of architecture, the patio, courtyards or inner courts are the heart of the house, spatially connecting each room, providing shade and shelter from the outside and to the outside. They are indispensable devices for relating to the context and useful for domesticating it. Although Miami's climate is very different from the Mediterranean, at times it bears resemblance to it. Therefore, in the project by Gaia S Studio and Andrea Benedetti, the morpho-typological inspiration becomes a bioclimatic expedient. The courtyard oriented to the North dominates the plan with a U-shaped geometry, seeking a layout that creates natural shading and exploits reflected light rather than direct sunlight. In this way, a type of natural lighting that is more evenly spread throughout the interior environment is achieved, with the additional advantage that indirect light does not convert into heat and contributes to a more efficient thermal- hygrometric control of the house. The building then opens to the North with large windows offering different views of the landscape, while on the other facades, the openings are of reduced size and seek a shading effect derived from devices such as eaves, frames, and shutters. Morphological signs design the architectural object with changing shadow configurations at every hour of the day and tend towards the pursuit of "passive architecture", in other words, an attitude that refers to careful planning of the design intervention regarding local conditions, such as orientation and wind direction, connected to all the devices that allow the minimizing of the amount of energy needed to "actively" control internal thermal comfort.
La casa a corte è il tratto peculiare delle città mediterranee, un luogo per l’abitare desiderato al punto da ispirare intere sessioni di sperimentazione ideale a firma di molteplici architetti in diversi anni. In queste architetture il patio, le corti o i cortili sono il centro della casa e collegano spazialmente ogni stanza, fornendo ombra e riparo all’esterno e dall’esterno. Si tratta di indispensabili dispositivi di relazione con il contesto utili per addomesticarlo. Sebbene il clima di Miami sia molto diverso da quello Mediterraneo, esso a tratti gli rassomiglia. Perciò, nel progetto di Gaia S Studio e Andrea Benedetti, l’ispirazione morfo-tipologica diviene espediente bioclimatico. Il cortile orientato a nord conquista la planimetria a forma di geometrica U, ricercando una disposizione che crea ombreggiature naturali e sfrutta la luce riflessa piuttosto che quella diretta del sole. In questo modo, si riesce a creare un tipo di illuminazione naturale più diffusa nell’ambiente interno, con l’ulteriore vantaggio derivante dal fatto che la luce indiretta non si trasforma in calore e contribuisce a un più efficiente controllo termo-igrometrico della casa. L’edificio allora si apre a nord con grandi finestre che offrono diversi scorci di paesaggio, mentre sulle altre facciate le bucature sono di dimensione ridotta e ricercano un corredo d’ombra derivante da dispositivi come sporti, cornici e persiane. Segni morfologici che disegnano l’oggetto architettonico con conformazioni d’ombra cangianti a ogni ora del giorno e tendono alla ricerca dell’“architettura passiva”. Ovvero di quella attitudine che fa riferimento a una attenzione nella pianificazione dell’intervento progettuale rispetto alle condizioni locali, come orientamento e andamento dei venti, connessa a tutti gli espedienti che consentono di ridurre al minimo la quantità di energia che serve per controllare “attivamente” il comfort termico interno.
