Nostalgia in the re-construction of Muslim identity in the aftermath of 1857 and the myth of Delhi

I musulmani indiani, nel processo di ricostruzione dell’identità indo-musulmana dopo il trauma del Mutiny (1857), produssero un gran numero di scritti basati su una selezione di immagini del passato, costruendo una specifica “memoria culturale”. Consapevolmente o meno, essi reagirono all’abolizione dell’impero mughal e alla propria perdita di status nelle sfera pubblica ricostruendo per gli indo-musulmani un passato comune basato sulla nostalgia. Indo-Muslim intellectuals, in the process of reconstructing Indo-Muslim identity after the trauma of the Mutiny (1857) produced a large amount of writings based on a selection of images of the past, building a specific Indo-Muslim “cultural memory”. Consciously or not, they reacted to the abolition of the Mughal empire and their loss of status in the public sphere, and re-constructed a common past for the imagined community of the Indian Muslims, largely based on nostalgia.
