The philhellenic movement influenced significantly the cultural and political scene of Italy throughout the 19th century. A number of texts allow us to argue that the Italian society was not indifferent to the Greek people’s attempt to reclaim their freedom. The article, referring to texts that have been repeatedly commented on by critics of the 20th century, attempts to re-evaluate these documents and to highlight the political perspective of the discussion on the Greek question; a discussion that, during the last decades of the 18th century, primarily focused on the issue of the Greek identity.
