Abstract

In his treatise Περὶ μονήρους λέξεως the Greek grammarian Herodian has a long discussion of the name of the god Poseidon (Attic Ποσειδῶν) as attested in a number of diverse literary texts, and quotes some “eccentric” forms, found in fragments either of Doric authors or set in a Doric milieu, showing <ι> instead of <ει> in the second syllable, i.e. Ποτιδᾶ (gen.), Ποτιδᾶ (voc.) e Ποτιδᾶν (acc.) in Epi charmus fr. 70 K.-A., Sophron fr. 125 K.-A., and Eupolis’ Heilotes fr. 149 K.-A.; /iː/ in all cases. This article aims at showing that for a number of reasons in those fragments the spelling with <ι> (= /iː/), namely the monophthongization of an original /ei/, should be kept in our modern editions and not corrected to <ει> as it regularly is. Besides, “also Ποτῐδᾶς or Ποτειδᾶς (codd. vary)” in LSJ, s.v. Ποσειδῶν should be revised (Ποτῐδᾶς with a short /i/ is not attested).
