This article focuses on the Suetonian biography of Nero by drawing attention to the sayings (dicta), that the biographer attributes to Nero. The paper, therefore, aims to demonstrate that the selection operated by Suetonius is functional to ridicule Nero in the role of citharoedus and histrio. By the use of dicta, Suetonius deconstructs Nero’s public image by emphasizing, on the one hand, his commitment to the artistic performances; on the other, his disregard for his political role of princeps.

Abstract
This article focuses on the Suetonian biography of Nero by drawing attention to the sayings (dicta), that the biographer attributes to Nero. The paper, therefore, aims to demonstrate that the selection operated by Suetonius is functional to ridicule Nero in the role of citharoedus and histrio. By the use of dicta, Suetonius deconstructs Nero’s public image by emphasizing, on the one hand, his commitment to the artistic performances; on the other, his disregard for his political role of princeps.File allegati a questo prodotto
