The article investigates the image of Italy and Rome in the United States on the occasion of the 1960 Summer Olympics. Through a wide selection of periodical and daily press, newsreel footage and the reports of the Office of Public Opinion Studies, it focuses on the perception of Italy and its capital city in the US public debate and public opinion at beginning of the 1960s. It also takes into account the analyses of Italian society and politics drafted by the USIS and American embassy in Rome at the time. In so doing, the article explores several factors shaping perceptions of the peninsula on the other shore of the Atlantic in the early 1960s: long-term representations of Italy, also inspired by its ancient past, rooted in American culture; the enthusiasm stirred in the USA by the Italian post-war economic boom; finally, concerns related to the Cold War, especially at a time of political change in Italy.
