This study analyses Machado de Assis’s most allegorical novel, Esau and Jacob (Esaú e Jacó), from the starting point of its ambivalent symbols relating to Brazilian religiosity and other popular traditions, such as children’s games. It seeks to answer the following question: can we view Machado de Assis as a historian of collective mentalities, chiefly through his knowledge of and sensibility towards Brazilian popular traditions?
