The restoration of the Theatre of Marcellus, begin in 1926 completed in the thirties, fully reflects the discussion that was underway in Italy, with regard to restoration, on the eve of the Athens conference and the publication of the 1st Charter of Italian Restoration. For the project addressed all the various subthemes of restoration, and not merely those specifically tied to the field of archaeology (excavation, reinforcement, repair or replacement of missing portions), but also architectural considerations, such as stratifications and the surrounding environment. In the work of repair and reinforcement, traditional techniques were used, employing the same materials as in ancient times, along with modern-day ones (including reinforced concrete and steel), evaluating each situation as it arose, with the most effective solution determined through direct experimentation in the field. A commission established specifically for the undertaking, consisting of the most prestigious figures in the field of restoration at the time, including Corrado Ricci, Giovan Battista Giovenale and others, provided the planning guidelines for the work carried out by Alberto Calza Bini and his collaborators.

Abstract
A commission established specifically for the undertaking, consisting of the most prestigious figures in the field of restoration at the time, including Corrado Ricci, Giovan Battista Giovenale and others, provided the planning guidelines for the work carried out by Alberto Calza Bini and his collaborators.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
