The aim of the contribution is to reflect on the concept of plurilingualism as it is used and understood from its definition in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001, CEFR) and its implications for language education. In the wake of the CEFR, this concept, which contrasts with the more traditional concept of multilingualism, is very much present in the field of language education today, with frequent reference to plurilingual education. After having shown that this concept was already present since the second half of the 1970s, in its theoretical dimension, in the writings of De Mauro (1975; 1977), and, in its applicative dimension, in the GISCEL Ten Theses for Democratic Language Education , we analyse whether and how it is used in some recent European documents, subsequent to the CEFR, documents of both a political and a technical nature drawn up by the European Commission and the Council of Europe.

Abstract
The aim of the contribution is to reflect on the concept of plurilingualism as it is used and understood from its definition in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001, CEFR) and its implications for language education. In the wake of the CEFR, this concept, which contrasts with the more traditional concept of multilingualism, is very much present in the field of language education today, with frequent reference to plurilingual education. After having shown that this concept was already present since the second half of the 1970s, in its theoretical dimension, in the writings of De Mauro (1975; 1977), and, in its applicative dimension, in the GISCEL Ten Theses for Democratic Language Education , we analyse whether and how it is used in some recent European documents, subsequent to the CEFR, documents of both a political and a technical nature drawn up by the European Commission and the Council of Europe.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
