The lightning performance of overhead distribution lines is affected by both direct and indirect lightning. This study focuses on the influence of some protection measures on a real 20 kV medium-voltage distribution line under direct lightning events. Since the considered distribution line has no specific lightning protection, its behaviour with the addition of a shield wire and/or surge arresters is discussed. Finally, some economic consideration under these different protection measures is carried out.

Abstract

The lightning performance of overhead distribution lines is affected by both direct and indirect lightning.
