The article proposes a reading of L’esclusa through a geocritical perspective, which proves to be fertile for the interpretation of the novel, highlighting aspects that have so far been little considered: from the setting in Palermo, a necessary choice in light of Pirandello’s biography, to the investigation of sources, which demonstrates the reading of Spettacoli e feste popolari siciliane by Pitrè and allows to recontextualize the first part of the novel in Palermo (and not in Girgenti). The places and the interaction of the characters with them, the individual landscape elements, the itineraries, etc., are charged with poetic value and play an essential role in representing the clash between the individual and society.
