The final murder is a substitution for suicide, i. e. for the annihilation, which Cesare Dorello aspires to. The structure of the essay is not properly psychoanalytic, although it makes use of a generically Freudian terminology. The author strengthens his hypothesis by a series of findings regarding the motif of self-destruction in other Verga’s characters, suggesting a global interpretation of Verga’s work in this key, and obviously referring to a future in-depth study
Il saggio interpreta il romanzo di Verga Il marito di Elena basandosi sull’ipotesi di lavoro della presenza di un forte istinto di morte nel protagonista. L’omicidio finale è una sosti tuzione del suicidio, dell’annichilamento cui aspira Cesare Dorello. L’impianto del saggio non è propriamente psicoanalitico, anche se fa uso di una terminologia genericamente freudiana. L’ipotesi è rafforzata da una serie di riscontri relativi al motivo dell’autodistru zione in altri personaggi verghiani, prospettando una interpretazione globale dell’opera di Verga in questa chiave, e rimandando ovviamente a un approfondimento futuro.
