From the very beginning of his work, Hegel appears attentive to the function of religion as a social bond. However, this view of religion clashes with the split of religious and political spheres as characteristic of modernity and the religion that marks it, Christianity. The essay pursues this problem through a secondary tradition text from the course on the philosophy of religion given by Hegel in Berlin in 1831 and the conclusions of the treatment of Christianity in the 1824 and 1827 courses. In the 1831 text Hegel shows the identical foundation of religion and state and the determination of differences up to the contrast between religious commands and self-realization in real life. In the conclusion of the discussion of the Christian community in the 1827 course, the problem is reversed: The church is born as a separate reality and then becomes contaminated with the world. Hegel seems to be able to come to grips with this split through the idea of the ethical life, as permeated by a religion, the Christian religion, understood philosophically against naive forms of faith as well as the alternative view offered by the Enlightenment.
