Abstract
The theme of spolia in Islamic India has often been analysed from a political or ideological perspective, seeing them as a symbol of the Islamic victory over the local population. However, the nature of the reuse of hindu or jaina material is more complicated and can take different meanings depending on the geographical and historical context. To demonstrate the various ways in which this material was reused in mosques, the following cases will be considered: the Quwwat al-Islam, the congregational mosque of Delhi, and two small mosques in Bijapur, dated to the early decades of 1300s.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
