Political Unity and Individual Freedom in Hobbes’ Civil Religion · Hobbes denounces the presence of two powers (the power of the clergy and the power of government) as a danger to the life of the State and affirms the absolute necessity of reunification. Such reunification is possible both on the level of natural or rational religion and on that of revealed religion (which, historically, is the Christian) and leads, in both cases, to the model of a civil religion or public cult. Civil religion allows the neutralisation of religious conflicts and the domestication of religious anxieties : it is an anti-apocalyptic perspective, which does not envisage interruptions in history until the day of the Last Judgement and must guarantee the stability of the State and the unity of sovereignty. An essential element of civil religion is the divarication between an inner religious experience (individual, free and subjective, but strictly private), and its outer objectivations, i.e., the cults in which the community recognises itself (uniform and regulated by the State).

Abstract
An essential element of civil religion is the divarication between an inner religious experience (individual, free and subjective, but strictly private), and its outer objectivations, i.e., the cults in which the community recognises itself (uniform and regulated by the State).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
